Impacts & Insights of AI for Education Measurement: Suggestions for Graduate Students

This webinar is being co-hosted by the NCME Graduate Student Issues Committee and the NCME Artificial Intelligence in Measurement and Education (AIME) SIGIMIE.

This online webinar will discuss the broader implications of AI on foundational educational measurement concepts, drawing on from recent research on automated writing scoring and feedback systems. The explosion of ChatGPT into society has brought rapid awareness and interest in using Artificial Intelligence within Education Measurement. In this talk for graduate students in Education Measurement, we will discuss our perspectives on the opportunities and challenges that we have observed in our work as researchers and practitioners building AI solutions for educational assessment and learning applications. The conceptual foundations of measurement practices from the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (e.g., validity, reliability, and fairness) are more important than ever, but we believe that new approaches to implement them are needed. We will discuss recent research projects in automated writing scoring and feedback systems that represent some of the opportunities and limitations of current approaches.

  • Christopher Ormerod Ph.D., Cambium Assessment and AI-SIGMIE Co-Chair
  • John Whitmer Ed.D., Federation of American Scientists and AI-SIGMIE Co-Chair
