NCME Statement on Hate in America

Especially in the early years of the 20th century, testing in the United States was connected with attempts to unfairly and inaccurately characterize the worth of members of particular demographic groups, and to deprive them of access to education, employment, and the right to vote, among other things. That dishonorable history makes it all the more important that the National Council on Measurement in Education make clear its condemnation of hate, discrimination, and bias in our country in whatever forms they may occur. As NCME members, we work hard to help create methods and tools that policy makers, educators, and the public can use to identify how successfully our schools function for all student groups, and to identify and eliminate bias and unfairness in tests and test use. As educators, we deplore statements that endorse or excuse bigotry and reaffirm our commitment to fairness, inclusion, and respect for all.

NCME Assessment Literacy Initiative
NCME believes that improving assessment literacy of the general public, educators, and policy makers will benefit education broadly. To this end the NCME Standards and Test Use Committee has been tasked with
(1) identifying existing publically accessible materials (videos, booklets, podcasts, etc.) on assessment literacy,
(2) identifying member reviewers who will rate the materials against a rubric that the committee developed and the Board approved,
(3) coordinating the review of these materials, and
(4) for accepted content, getting explicit permission to link to those materials from the NCME website.
These materials might address topics including but not limited to: the use of test data, measurement of growth, administration of classroom assessments, value added models, use of rubrics, and grading.
The committee is ready to start with steps one and two and requires the assistance of NCME members to do this.

The inaugural NCME 2017 Special Conference attracted 267 U.S. and international attendees, and earned high marks for the diversity of attendees and perspectives presented, the informal, intimate atmosphere which facilitated discussion and networking, and the practical and applicable information on classroom and formative assessment.

NCME Fundamentals of Classroom Assessment Video
