Dear NCME Colleagues: “The National Council on Measurement in Education is a community of measurement scientists and practitioners who work together to advance theory and applications of educational measurement to benefit society.” This mission statement continues to ground our work and purpose. In a time when educational measurement practices, data, and the very foundation of science are under increasing scrutiny and threat, these guiding principles are more important than ever. As I step into the role of NCME President, I do so with humility and resolve. In this period of instability and uncertainty, my foremost priority is to listen to our members ...

Even as we meet here in Denver to celebrate measurement scholarship and practice, we know that many of our members have faced serious challenges to their research and livelihood due to recent funding and staffing terminations at the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This has included termination of contracts, layoffs at many education research firms, uncertainty about existing and pending grants, and inability to answer questions about future data access and quality due to reductions in force among IES staff. NCME stands for our mission: advancing theory and applications of educational measurement ...

If you are participating in the program, have had your travel support reduced or eliminated due to federal cuts, and would benefit from a $1000 grant for travel expense reimbursement and/or a registration fee waiver, you may apply for support using the form available here . Applications will continue to be reviewed on an ongoing basis until funds are exhausted. If you or your organization ...

Dear NCME Colleagues: Although this month remains in my presidency, this is my last News@NCME update as president. It has now been almost a year since I established the themes that have guided my term: Continuity, Unity, and Service . I am proud to have upheld these themes, and I am prouder still to have seen all the ways that our members have enacted these themes as values, through their scholarship, their work, and their actions. 1) One of the highlights of my year was witnessing our community’s support of their fellow members in response to ongoing cuts and uncertainty by the U.S. Executive Branch. After our board took unanimous action last month to ...

Dear fellow NCME members, A strong professional community supports its members in difficult times. Recent cuts by the U.S. executive branch to funding and positions in measurement in education are having a direct and widespread negative impact on our community members and our mission to advance theory and applications of educational measurement to benefit society . Last month, the NCME Board acted to waive annual meeting registration fees for presenting members affected directly by executive branch cuts to funding and positions. On March 12, the NCME Board voted unanimously to take the following additional actions to support affected NCME members, NCME ...

Dear NCME Colleagues, Like many of you watching executive activity in and around federal data institutions in the United States, we in NCME leadership have been alarmed by rapid and reckless changes and their effects on our many members who work for and with federal institutions. These changes threaten the NCME mission : to improve measurement scholarship and practice to benefit society. On Tuesday, NCME joined our sibling organizations on the Council of Professional Associations on Federal Statistics ( COPAFS ) to uphold the value of federal data systems, the laws that govern their privacy and quality, and the role of Congress in funding and oversight. ...
